2017 Farmer’s Insurance Open: Torrey Pines

It’s our second year attending the Farmer’s Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course.  Last year a “baby hurricane” via a torrential downpour with 70 mph winds ended our Sunday early.  The eventual winner, Brandt Snedeker, clearly shot the best round on Sunday and was crowned on Monday.  Warm and sunny weather is forecasted for Sunday.

As we check-in at the front desk of the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines (hilton.com/la_jolla), professional golfer Ben Crane (failed to make the cut) is on our left making check-out arrangements and another professional golfer (whose name I can’t recall) is on our right discussing an early exit fee from the hotel since he also failed to make the cut.

I guess I was tired as I forgot both my I-phone and camera in the hotel room.  The buffet breakfast at the Torreyanna Grille inside the Hilton is really nice.  The mango coconut chia pudding is light in sweetness, could use a little more yogurt and less seeds, but it is nice regardless.

I have the chef make me an omelet with pork shoulder, monterey jack cheese, onions, mushrooms, cilantro and eggs.  Truly delicious!  The sausage, bacon, super fresh watermelon (and other fruit) and oatmeal with numerous toppings were some other highlights for me.  Another gem is the scramble of corn beef hash mixed with corn.  I apologize for the absence of food pictures.

South Course:  Hole 16 (Par 3)

Probably my favorite hole on the South Course.

“Filthy” tall rough for these pro’s…

It sure would be fun to “deep six” a ball in there and watch me hit it about 35 yards with a 7-iron.

I will refrain from posting any tournament play photos I might have “inadvertently” taken of professional golfers.  It is forbidden and I don’t want anyone going “Full Soup Nazi” on me.

We watch (no photo) at the 18th hole as John Rahm buries a 60 foot downhill sloping putt for an eagle and essentially closes the door on this tourney and secures the victory.

A pretty cool way to conclude this tourney.

Hilton Bar: Drinks after the tourney…

We have the complimentary coupon so we “sniff in” for a beverage before dinner.

King’s Fish House: Carlsbad

This panko fried catfish is moist with a flaky crust.  We hadn’t dined at a King’s Fish House (kingsfishhouse.com) since 2008 because most of their fish was bland or dry.  The free sourdough bread is tasty and goes well in my clam chowder (lacking clams).  However, the grilled zucchini needs more char from the grill.

We celebrate a belated Christmas opening gifts in my bro’s hotel room.

THE END!!!

You know, when I went back and looked again, the resemblance is amazing. I read somewhere that “Tommy Page is survived by his partner…” etc. Uh, were you trying to send your friends and family a, um, little dark secret? “Come out, come out, wherever you are…”

On a completely UNRELATED note, it looks like you and yours had a great time. Super weather in a nice slice of golf heaven. My favorite pic is of the Hilton bar. Nice lighting.

If you have any secrets you need to spill, bro. I’m there for you. Do NOT suffer in silence…
